National University (NU) is a private, co-educational institution located in
Sampaloc, Manila. It was founded by Don Mariano Fortunato Jhocson in 1900 as the Colegio Filipino as an elementary and high school institution serving a couple of enrolled students at that time. As the number of students grew, Colegio Filipino started offering Bookkeeping and Accounting courses. This led to the changing of its name to Colegio Mercantil. While the number of enrollees increased, the founder partnered with the Lacson Brothers and established the Philippine Law School, which eventually became the institution’s College of Law. In 1916, Colegio Mercantil was changed into National Academy and by 1921, it received its university status.
National University caters graduate and postgraduate programs for the students. It has nine (9) colleges offering various courses in
Architecture, Business and Accountancy, Computer Studies, Dentistry, Education, Engineering, Pharmacy, Nursing, and
Hospitality Management. The university is also K-12 ready with its
