Let’s Try These Practical Tips On Choosing A College Course

Deciding on what college course you should take has got to be one of the hardest decisions you will have to make as a teenager. There are several factors to consider, from deciding on where you want to study, financial aid, and even scholarships available. As long as you plan ahead and are committed to making the most out of your future, there is truly nothing to be worried about! Here are five steps to take in deciding your course for college!

List down what you enjoy

It’s important to understand yourself and know what you enjoy and what you don’t. The first step that you should take is to list down as many hobbies, activities, and even topics you enjoy. Consider which extracurricular activities you did not like and activities you have been taking part in ever since. Do you enjoy your ballet classes? Do you look forward to your debate club meetings weekly? You do not have to consider anything else at this point, simply list it down if you enjoy it.

Narrow down that list

With that same list, think of the careers that perform those activities. If you enjoy your laboratory classes, you might want to list down a career related to science. If you have been part of your newsletter team, consider careers related to media and journalism. Also ask yourself, “Can I see myself still doing this years from now?” Do you think you can dedicate your time to this? Once you have the list of careers, take a look at the courses that will equip you with the necessary skills and experience needed.

Look for upperclassmen or graduates who are taking or have taken the course

Once you have the shortlist, try to interview upperclassmen or graduates. Ask them about their experience with the course. Which subjects did they enjoy the most? If given the chance, would they have taken another course? Being able to listen to someone’s personal experience with a program is much more helpful than just simply reading reviews online. They have already gone through the process and they will indeed be happy to help!

Consider on taking a minor if you’re undecided on two majors

If you are down to two courses, consider an interdisciplinary program. Schools offer options for minors and specializations. For instance, you want to study International Relations and Economics. You may opt to major in International Relations and take up a minor in Economics, or vice versa. Minors can either be a related field to your major but it can also be a course that is completely unrelated. Some students opt to major in a science course and minor in an arts course. This allows them to explore both fields without sacrificing the other.

Be open-minded when choosing a college course and career!

At the end of the day, you have to keep in mind that the course you end up with won’t actually determine your career. Sure, courses are designed to equip you with the knowledge and experience needed for that field. However, it doesn’t end there. Keep an open mind. Understand that nothing is set in stone just yet.

Making a list and narrowing it down is the first step in deciding on what course you should take. Make sure that you are passionate about what you will be studying. You have to be willing to dedicate your time in honing the skills needed for your preferred field. It may seem difficult to pick a course, however, nothing is ever set to stone.
