Your barkada’s role in helping you achieve your goals
Behind every successful main character is their fun, funky, and supportive barkada. Even though you are the star of your own coming of age film, the people who always have your back also deserve a standing ovation. Whether you’re one-half of a power duo like Dionne and Cher from Clueless or the Joey Tribbiani of your friend group, having your barkada by your side is an essential for surviving the craziness of highschool and beyond.
They’re your second family, inside and outside of school.
As a young student, you spend around 8 hours a day in school— it’s actually a lot of time spent in school compared to how much time you spend at home with your family. Because of this, your barkada undeniably becomes somewhat of a second family to you.
High school is the point in your life where you have time to discover yourself and figure out the type of people you want to surround yourself with. It’s really the point in time where you mature the most— and your barkada’s right there, watching from the front row. You see each other through that growing pains stage. You may argue and disagree with one another; you may lose friends, but that’s just how it works. When you’re feeling indecisive and unsure, your barkada helps make the best decision for you— they might even know you even better than you know yourself. They push you outside your bubble of hesitancy, whether directly or indirectly, but still always support your decisions no matter what. And at the end of it all— all the struggles, obstacles you’re left with the people who stuck by you through the worst of it.
And in all honesty, you also make the best memories with your friends in high school. From first your heartbreak to college admissions stress, your high school barkada really sees you at your best and your worst— and they’re here for it!
They’re with you through the ups, downs, and in betweens.
Transitioning from highschool to college is a rollercoaster experience for any student. Admittedly, you might realize the true value of your highschool barkada once you get to college as you realize it’s so much harder to make friends in this new environment.
In college, you may start out in a large friend group (a.k.a. your block) but then your circle may slowly narrow down to just a few friends you really fit with. College is really the climax of your coming of age story. The emotional rollercoaster you experience in college is like no other you’ll ever experience. Thus, having people by your side who you relate to is essential— people with you to breakdown with when it gets too stressful and people who also have fun with you during the short breaks you get. Having people by your side who you truly relate to makes you feel at peace in the midst of chaos.
Your college barkada will also be with you during those early moments after graduation. Job hunting, living on your own, finding purpose after college— you’ll all share these issues and want to push each other further and further. You’ll see each other’s dreams pan out. You might see others lose grasp of who they want to be. For either moment, your barkada is there for you. Basically, your college barkada is there for those in between periods, where you’re still navigating a new environment like college or overcoming the gap between student and adult life.
