THE VISION BOARD

Preparing for the Jobs of the Future? Here’s the Secret

If you think pagers and beepers are relics from ancient history, don’t worry. It’s just a matter of time before your smartphone and other gadgets will join that club. #fact

The truth is, technology has already found its way to make our lives faster than we are able to keep up with. Just look into your long-overdue Netflix watch list and those online courses you swore to take last year. (No pressure!)

According to a study, approximately 65% of children entering primary school today will take up jobs that don’t exist yet. Others call it the “jobs of the future.” How do you prepare for that

So we sat down with Mr. Jack Tuason, the founder of Enderun Colleges, and Atty. Raymund Martelino, a Business Law professor in the college, to talk about the preparations you can make as a student and the role that schools play to help you do just that.

Answering the million-dollar question

Have you ever stared at your notes and said to yourself in frustration, “Saan ko ba magagamit ‘to sa totoong buhay?” We all probably have. Lessons like this often feel like a waste of time, effort, and brain cells. Lessons that Mr. Tuason himself made sure the Enderun curriculum addresses every semester.

“The first thing that I tell all of our faculty is if they are teaching anything that the students will never use again, take it off the course material. If it’s not useful or relevant, don’t teach it. That’s how we stay current with what’s going on. We are constantly replacing things that are old and updating our curriculum. We rebuild and refine each class every single semester.”

– Mr. Jack Tuason, Founder of Enderun Colleges

The last thing you’d want as a student is to study hard for years only to graduate for a job you’re not qualified for. The world changes. So should the curriculum that prepares students for it.

Want to achieve your dream job someday? Choose a school that equips students with future-proof skills at present. (Para din hindi ka na magtaka kung saan pwedeng gamitin yung math equations IRL!)

The human factor

Here’s the thing. The more tech-driven we become, the more human-centric we need to be. In every stage of development, the human factor remains crucial.

We see that in the education shift brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. How prepared is our education system for the new normal? More so, the professors and students? (Join our discussion on social media. Follow the hashtag #EdukasyonAsks!)

THE ENDERUN WAY. Enderun Colleges ensures its students learn best–both in theory and practice.

Unprecedented times call for unchanging truths. The educators’ role to teach and guide students should not be limited to course manuals and lecture handouts. They ought to equip students to adapt and be adept to an ever-changing workplace.

What does a future-ready student look like? Atty. Martelino describes it in a nutshell, “a highly motivated independent learner that is proficient in technology.

Do you have a game plan?

Tbh, the future will always be a mystery. But that does not mean you’ll blindly wait for it. As a student, planning ahead makes a huge difference. Choosing a course and college, for starters. Don’t worry. Hindi mo naman kailangan i-figure out lahat agad! You just need to have a vision of where you want to go.

“Some students choose their schools based on prestige, tradition, or pedigree. It’s not goal-driven. Sometimes, it’s not even aligned with the personality and skills of the students. The choice of the course or school should be aligned with your three, five, or ten-year plan. Where do you want to go? Then that’s when you do Step 1.”

– Atty. Raymund Martelino, Business Law professor at Enderun Colleges

If you want to be a restaurateur, Enderun Colleges prides itself with a strong Hospitality Management program. Likewise, if you want to pursue any other career path, plan it out.

Here’s the game plan: take only the steps that will lead you to the future you have in mind. Deal?

Making the future less scary and more fun

When all is said and done, your academic degree will open the right doors for you, but it is your self-discovery in college that will tell how you’ll enter those doors. Hopefully, your future is as fun as it is less scary.

When interviewing associates in the firm, Atty. Martelino asks two important things that can apply to you as well as a student: Do you have a hobby and do you have a winning attitude? Because if you do, you’ve got what it takes to seize whatever lies ahead.

You are, after all, the secret to unlocking your future
