THE VISION BOARD

IN FOCUS: Humanities and Social Sciences

It’s that time of the year again. The enrollment season is on full swing! If you’re a junior high school graduate, you’re probably thinking about what strand to enroll in senior high school. This can be a bit of pressure (well for some)  since you’re basically preparing yourself for your college education.

making a big decision in taking SHS strands

Still confused about what strand to enroll for your senior high school education? Well, we’ve got you covered with something you might want to consider — the Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) strand.

This is one of the four majors tracks being offered in the senior high school programs in the Philippines. The other three are Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM); Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM); and General Academic Strand (GAS).

The Humanities and Social Sciences are the studies of human behavior and interaction in social, cultural, environmental, economic, and political contexts (Nosebleed na mars? hihi).

oh realize

In the simplest terms, HUMSS will help you improve your reading, writing, and speaking skills and understanding of social issues around you.

The subjects under the HUMSS will help you better understand the world in which we live, and how people can participate as active and informed citizens with the high-level skills needed for the 21st century. It’s all about people and understanding them in different lenses.

If mathematics is your waterloo, no difficult problems and equations will be dealt with here –just the basics.

Students under this strand are aspiring to become a teacher, psychologist, lawyer, and journalist, among others.

If you feel like becoming a public servant, this strand is definitely for you! Well, in this political climate, we need someone who knows his priority and the welfare of the general public. Not that we’re saying that there are lawmakers who prioritized passing the highly divisive Anti-Terrorism bill over mass testing and giving financial aid to families affected by the almost 3 months of lockdown (not throwing some shade here…).

Now, more than ever, we need to hone public servants that put the best interest of people at heart. So if you dream of becoming the new Yorme of your town, the HUMSS strand is a perfect fit for you!

But, there’s more. If you have the nose for news, the strand can be your first step to becoming like one of your favorite news personalities. Jessica Soho, Atom Araullo, Karen Davila, and Maria Ressa –anything is possible. After two years of preparation under the HUMSS strand, communication degrees will be easier for you.

Attorney? Yes? If you’re dreaming of having that title in your name, well HUMSS is a preparatory stage for that. There are a lot of pre-law bachelor’s degrees whose focus is humanities and social sciences. Among these are Diplomacy and International Relations, International Studies major in European Studies, Community Development, Political Science, and a lot more! To learn more about these programs, check out this link

Here’s a quick  rundown of a bachelor’s degree you can pursue after graduating from the HUMSS strand:

  • Arts in Communication
  • Elementary Education
  • Secondary Education
  • Journalism (Bachelor of Arts)
  • Broadcast Journalism
  • Social Studies
  • Philosophy
  • Asian Studies
  • Literature
  • Foreign Studies
  • Political Science

These are just a few! There’s a lot more if these don’t spark any interest.
