5 Eco-Friendly Apps You Need To Download Right Now

6 min read

Dec 10, 2019

This might just be your new favorite way to save the environment. Introducing: eco-friendly apps.

It’s no news that our planet needs saving, bigtime. Massive deforestation and wildfires in the Amazon. Worsening air quality in cities worldwide. Extreme weather conditions. You name it.

While we’ve long been fighting for climate action, we’re not leaving for Mars just yet. Every day, we see more people, organizations, businesses, and some governments doing their part to save the planet. And your role as a student is just as important!

You can start making small but significant changes in your lifestyle. And here are 7 eco-friendly apps that can help you do just that.

Ecosia

Magtanim ay di biro. Maghapong nakayuko. You may know the lyrics to this folk song by heart. In the same way, you may know that planting is real hard work. But did you know you can literally plant trees just by searching the web? That’s the idea behind Ecosia.

This search engine app uses ad revenue to plant trees in biodiversity hotspots around the world whenever you search. Imagine researching for school or your thesis’ RRL and rebuilding a forest at the same time. Motivated to switch from Google yet?

Ecosia users have planted over 70 million trees as of this writing—and that number can keep growing as you keep on searching!

Available on mobile for iOS and Android, and as a web browser

#Climate

People nowadays don’t go online—they live online. (Not that you didn’t know that already.) The question now is, what apps consume your time? Aside from your favorites, we got another app worth a spot on your phone. Introducing the #climate app!

This online platform is social media for eco-warriors. Create a profile based on environment-related topics you’re interested in, and the app will curate relevant information and action steps just for you. It’ll even link you to organizations with the same advocacy. Now, that’s social media for social good.

Available on mobile for iOS

JouleBug

Feeling competitive? JouleBug is a gamified app for eco-conscious advocates! This app makes sustainable living fun (and rewarding) with daily challenges complete with matching badges to track your progress. You can even compete with your friends to earn the most points.

Turning the lights off when you leave a room reduces energy consumption (and your electricity bill!). Bringing your own reusable shopping bag lessens the use of plastic bags. These small acts might be a no-brainer but doing it repeatedly over time makes a big impact on the environment. Joulebug can help with that!

Available on mobile for iOS and Android

Forest

Studying is hard. But avoiding distractions while studying makes it harder. And mindlessly scrolling through your phone won’t help you focus on your lessons either. This is where Forest saves the day!

This app combines productivity and climate action in one go. Need to focus? Pick a seed. Set a timer. And Forest will plant that tree while muting your notifications. Then you can get to your tasks!

The best part is, the app partners with Trees for the Future so you get to grow virtual trees that can be exchanged for actual trees. Just don’t leave the app or your tree will die.

Available on mobile for iOS and Android

EcoCharge

This simple but useful app solves one of the most common yet overlooked ways energy is being wasted every day: overcharging your gadgets.

EcoCharge sets an alarm to notify you when your smartphone is fully charged! It’s a smart, hassle-free way of becoming more energy efficient in our everyday tasks. Plus, you can increase your device’s battery life and save the environment at the same time. Win-win situation!

Available on mobile for Android

Bonus: Session Groceries

If you still have some phone storage to spare, we have another favorite eco-friendly app to recommend: Session Groceries! It’s an online grocery app that lets you buy fresh produce straight from our local farmers.

Not only does it help farmers reap the rewards of their hard work, but it also helps minimize the carbon footprint in the process. When you buy straight to our farmers, there’d be less production costs involved. More efficient, more eco-friendly!

Available on the web and on mobile for iOS and Android

Climate crisis is real. But so is every effort taken to solve it. So go ahead and download these eco-friendly apps! It all counts.
